Abstract

This article provides a brief review of education in Antiquity, focusing specifically on Greece and Rome, and implementing a comparative and critical analysis. Special emphasis is placed on the educational thought of crucial figures such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Marcus Aurelius. The study establishes that in ancient Greece (5th–4th centuries B.C.), the guiding idea of formation was paideia, a concept that transcended mere cognitive instruction. Paideia was defined as integral formation and "human upbringing," emphasizing character development and the daily exercise of citizen virtues.
